Activate the Subscribe2 plugin

Activate the Subscribe2 widget and configure your settings on the Subscribe2 page — make sure you enable the Enable Subscribe2 Widget?

Add the Subscribe2 widget to your blog sidebar

1. Activating your Subscribe2 Plugin

Go to Plugins > Installed in your Dashboard

Click on Activate below the Subscribe2 plugin

2. Configuring your Subscribe2 Settings

Once Subscribe2 has been activated in your Plugins area you need to go to Settings > Subscribe2 to configure your settings and activate your Subscribe2 widget.

Subscribe2 has quite a few configuration options, so lets explain them one at a time:

Notification Settings

Restrict the number of recipients per email to

Used if a hosting provider imposes limits on out going emails (as a measure to limit spammers). By default, this is set to unlimited; no limit on the number of emails sent to recipients.

There is no need to edit this setting.

Send Admins notifications for new

This allows you to decide if you want to receive a notification when a person subscribes and/or unsubscribes. Change this to Neither if you don’t want to receive email notifications of subscription changes.

Include theme CSS stylesheet in HTML notifications

By default, include theme CSS stylesheet in HTML notifications is set to yes. There is no need to change this setting.

Send Emails for Pages

Change this to Yes if you want your email subscribers to be notified of new pages added to your site

Send Emails for Password Protected Posts

You normally use password protected posts to restrict the access to viewing particular posts or pages. In most situations you would leave this as No.

Send Emails for Private Posts

Private posts are only visible on the blog’s post page to logged in Editors and Administrators. In most situations you would leave this as No.

Send Email From

When the email is sent to your subscribers it adds an email address and username to the bottom of the email. The ‘Send Email from’ option provides you the ability to have it sent from the person who wrote the post (Post Author) or a specific user attached to the blog.

Send Emails

In most situations you would leave this as For Each Post. This means your subscribers will be sent an email each time a new post is added to your blog.
Once Daily or Weekly are more likely to be used on blogs with high posting frequency i.e. several posts per day. With either of these options your subscribers will be sent Daily or Weekly Digest of your posts.

‘Send Emails’ — used to control how frequently the email is sent to your subscribers.

Email Templates

There are four different automatic email sent from Subscribe2 to subscribers:

Subscribe confirmation email

Unsubscribe confirmation email

Reminder email for unconfirmed subscribers

Post or Digest email

The Subscribe confirmation, Unsubscribe confirmation and Reminder emails are only sent to public subscribers. These are readers who subscribe by adding their email address to the Subscribe2 widget in your blog sidebar. To complete their request they need to click on the link in the email.

The email templates control what information is sent in each of these emails. In most situations you wouldn’t make changes to any of these email templates.

Excluded Categories

Excluded categories are used if you don’t want emails sent for specific post categories. For example, the category “All about Plugins” in the screenshot below has been selected; this means readers won’t be notified of any post assigned to that category.

However you can choose to allow registered users to subscribe to excluded categories.

Registered Subscribers users that are logged into their campus account and who have subscribe to email updates by clicking on your profile link in ‘manage your subscription options from your profile’.

They have an additional option area under Users > Subscription in the dashboard of the blog they have subscribe to. This area allows them to choose which categories they would like to receive notifications about and also allows them to choose the email format.

Set the number of Subscribers displayed per page:

Alignment

Both text and images can be aligned using the appropriate icons:

Left

Right

Center

Full

Note that full alignment can only be applied to text and will align both sides of the text.

Styles

The style drop-down menu allows you to change the formatting of any selected text. This includes various headings and other pre-defined styles built into your theme . Note that all styles are defined within your theme.

Text Color

To change text color you must first highlight a section of text:

Clicking on the down arrow next to the text color button will display a color selector:

Selecting a color will apply that color to the selected text and make it the default color for the color button.

Clicking on the text color button itself will apply the last default color.

Pasting Text

If you copy and paste text from somewhere else you may discover that it does not always appear exactly as you would expect. If you use the Paste as text button then a special cleanup process will run to remove any special formatting and HTML tags that may otherwise change your text.

Once clicked a window appears where you can enter your text:

Checking the keep linebreaks box will preserve all HTML <br /> tags. Unchecking this option will remove them.

Remove Formatting

The remove formatting button, as you would expect, removes all formatting (bold, italic, colors etc) from a highlighted section of text. First select your text:

When the button is clicked all the formatting will be removed:

Custom Characters

As well as the normal letters available directly from your keyboard you can also insert special characters. Position your cursor to where you want to insert a character and click on the insert custom character button. A popup window will appear:

Click any character and it will be inserted at your cursor position.

Outdent / Indent

The indent button will move text in by one level, and the outdent button will take away one level.

Link URL – The URL of the link (include http:// at the start for external websites)
Target – Select if you want the link to open in a new window
Title – Title of the link when a visitor hovers over it (a small tooltip will appear with the title)
Class – Advanced. Specify a CSS class for the link

After setting the options, click the Insert button, and the highlighted text will change to the color blue with an underline to signify a link.

If you try to put this (for example)

into the Add Link page, the @ gets removed and breaks the link.

Instead, put this there

Microsoft Word is a fine word processor for producing documents to be shared or printed, with a wealth of print-based options for indexing, and producing table of contents. As a web publishing tool it is a little less than ideal and produces very messy HTML. The same applies when using OpenOffice, or other word processors.

When text is pasted it initially looks fine:

But looking at the HTML code you can see that it is full of additional tagging information.

The more you edit this post the worse the situation gets. Should a problem occur you will then be faced with a lot of work trying to figure out what has happened and how to fix it. The same code above can be written a lot more cleanly using the Church Web Werx visual editor:

Using Word Cleanly

If you decide that you still want to use Word then you should use the Word cleanup feature to remove all extraneous tags from your text. From the visual editor click on the show kitchen sink button:

Then click on the paste Word button:

A window will appear where you can insert your Word content.

When satisfied you can then click insert and it will clean the content and insert it into your post. Note that all your formatting will be removed so any styles will need to be added in afterwards.

When creating a post or page on your Church Web Werx site, you have two editing modes available to you, depending on which you are most comfortable with.

Visual Editor

Powered by TinyMCE, the Visual Editor is the default mode for Church Web Werx sites and looks very similar to a word processor. The visual editor icons allow you to format text, change font alignment, insert bulleted and numbered lists, and more.

The Visual Editor can be disabled in the Personal Options section of your Church Web Werx user profile.

HTML Editor

The HTML editor has fewer options, but provides a way for you to edit the HTML in your posts and pages directly. This editing mode is aimed at users who are comfortable working with HTML. When you need to paste in code from an outside source you can use the HTML editor to do it.

Note that the HTML code you add must be well-formed.

Switching Editors

Switching between the Visual and HTML editing modes is easy. Just use the tabs directly above the right side of the editing area.

It is very easy to have a contact form on your site. All you need to do is type the following into any post or page:

[ contact-form] (just leave out the space after the first “[“)

After publishing, a simple contact form asking for the sender’s name, email address, website and message will be displayed.

If the visitor is already logged into a Church Web Werx site, their profile information will be used and the contact form will be similar to the image below.

When someone submits a message through the form, you receive that message in an email.

Additional Info

Your email address is never shown, and the sender never learns it (unless you reply to the email!).

You may get some spam, but you shouldn’t get a lot. All the messages people send to you through the contact form are filtered.

Visitors can type anything into the name and email boxes, so it is easy to fake an identity. If a logged in Church Web Werx member sends you a message, the end of the email will let you know that the message was sent by a verified user, and you can trust the name and email. Otherwise, you can’t trust anything. As with anything online, know that anonymity is both a curse and a blessing

The contact form cannot be used in the sidebar.

You can include any text or other allowed elements above or below the contact form.

The email is sent to the author of the post or page with the contact form in it. So each author on your blog can have his or her own contact form. You could have a text widget which links to each author’s contact page.

From here you can edit the phrase ignore list and enable extra options in the proofreading feature. Make sure you click Update Profile at the bottom of the page to save your settings.

Grammar and Style Options

The proofreader applies many of its grammar rules by default. These extra options find patterns of poor writing style:

Bias language may offend or alienate different groups of readers.

Clichés are overused phrases with little reader impact.

Complex phrases are words or phrases with simpler every-day alternatives.

A double negative is one negative phrase followed by another. The negatives cancel each other out, making the meaning hard to understand.

A hidden verb is a verb made into a noun. These often need extra verbs to make sense.

Jargon phrases are foreign words and phrases that only make sense to certain people.

Passive voice obscures or omits the sentence subject. Frequent use of passive voice makes your writing hard to understand.

Phrases to avoid are wishy-washy or indecisive phrases.

Redundant phrases can be shortened by removing an unneeded word.

Ignored Phrases

You may add a phrase to the ignore list by typing it into the text field and clicking Add. Click to remove a phrase from the ignore list. A phrase is one or more words and the ignore list is case-sensitive.

Additional Info

Can I add words to the dictionary?

No, but you can add phrases to an ignore list so they don’t show up as errors.

The writing checker flagged a word as misused when it was used correctly, what happened?

The proofreading feature looks for commonly confused words and then decides, using the surrounding context, if another word is a better fit. Sometimes it gets it wrong.

The proofreading feature missed an error I made, what happened?

The proofreading feature is not a replacement for carefully reading what you write. It is a safety net meant to capture common mistakes and bring them to your attention. Finding every error is not possible with today’s technology.
